Q: I’m a 30 year old Catholic man. My girlfriend leans more towards some kind of metaphysical or spiritual practice. How can my beliefs co-exist with hers? I love her deeply, but believe religion has to be a focal point in marriage.
A: Here’s the bottom line: God is God. Religion is not. God is infinite love, wisdom, power and goodness. There is no greater consciousness than the Divine, wouldn’t you agree? Religion, however, is man’s attempt to understand and connect with the Divine. And, since the human mind is limited in its ability to understand the infinite, it would stand to reason that religion would be limited in its interpretation of God. As a result religion can serve to separate people, rather than bring them together. If you want to find common ground in your belief systems, it would behoove both of you to look beyond ritual, tradition and inherited authority figures to seek out, explore, and discover your own truth. Talk a lot. Read a lot. And look in your heart, not your head, for answers. Your beliefs can co-exist if you’re willing to bond around common beliefs and spiritual values rather than a religious affiliation.
