Dear Seeker,
Recently I listened to a long-time client share of a recent experience where her boyfriend brought her to see a beautiful home that was for sale. Even though they weren’t in a buying position, it inspired him to go forth and conquer! They brought her kids along and everyone was so excited as they dreamed and visualized.
Everyone except her.
She instead looked over the stunning view, walked the grounds, and perused the lovely landscaping with a heavy heart. She thought to herself, “I had this once…and I lost it all.” You see, a very rough chapter of life had resulted in the loss of her home, the loss of a business and a painful bankruptcy.
As the only sad one in this happy bunch of house window shoppers, she discovered that she lost something even more valuable than her lifestyle. She had lost her ability to believe…in herself and in her dreams. She used to be like her boyfriend and kids: a go-getter that went for the stars! As we explored this opportunity for learning a number of gifts were revealed:
In her trauma she had assumed a new identity, “I am a broken woman who lost it all.” This led to the realization that until she embraced a new identity, it wouldn’t matter if she “did everything right,” she would only ever be able to experience being a broken woman who lost it all. Her past would indeed define her future.
How about you? Is a hardship defining your identity? Are you letting your past determine your future?
